What camera should I get?

Q. I'm looking for a point and shoot camera that I can use above and under water. I'm not completely sure to what depth under water but I would love to use it while scuba diving which I'm guessing would require a housing? High res is important.

Links would help immensely with any option(s) listed. Thanks!

A. Lots of info on waterproof cameras out there.

Best Digital Camera in 2013?

Q. I'm looking for a digital camera with the following:

* Awesome, detailed shots for both amateur and professional photography use
* Fast, extreme action modes with instant, non-blurry shots (no delay unless optional)
* Full 1080p Quality Video with Excellent Sound and no buzzing/noises
* Great Image Stabilization
* Lovely Zoom with little to no shaking and annoying sounds
* Ability to record beautifully in both low light and very bright settings
* Easiness to learn, maintain, and adjust to
* Durable and lasts for maybe 20 years

A lifetime warranty for a camera product would be nice, but I doubt it exists. I've looked at the newest Canon Rebel (zoom/sound issues), Nikon D7100 (seems too stiff in certain settings), some Panasonic models, etc. I am on a budget and want to record high quality music videos and shorts, and take fancy pictures with the camera I am seeking. I want to spend no more than maybe $650 on my ideal product. What are your suggestions and knowledge of expertise?

A. I have a dream that someday anyone who decides to take up photography as a hobby will first know and understand this: "It isn't the camera its the photographer."

A person with zero knowledge of light, composition and exposure will be unable to use any camera in any mode other than Program or Auto, allowing the camera to determine ISO, aperture and shutter speed. Even then, zero knowledge of just composition will usually produce mere snapshots.

In 42 years I have never owned a camera that made really good pictures.

In 42 years I have never owned a camera that made really bad pictures.

However, in those 42 years I have used a camera to make some really good pictures and some really bad pictures. The camera is just a tool and gets neither credit nor blame for my results good or bad. That's all on me.

Buy the least expensive DSLR you can find. Read & study the Owner's Manual. Then enroll in photography classes. Take notes. Practice. Make changes to aperture or shutter speed or ISO only when you understand why you're making them and what the results will be.

A 20 year old digital camera will be as useless as a 20 year old computer is today.

In many states a "lifetime" warranty is considered 7 years. Some high-end lenses (translate as a lens costing a few thousand dollars) have a 5 year warranty. Most DSLR bodies have a 1 year warranty.

Whats a good digital camera?
Q. I'm looking for a new camera that's around $100 or $120 I know that's not a lot but does anyone know a really nice digital camera please...?

A. Choose any Canon, Nikon, Samsung, Pentax, Panasonic or Sony. All 2012 and 2013 digital camera models are very powerful. Go to a store and put your hands on different cameras. See which cameras are within your budget and feel good. Any camera you buy will not disappoint you as long as you use it in good light. Most under $150 cameras will not work well in shooting fast moving objects indoor or taking photos in dull light. For that you will need to spend more than $500.
Now besides the camera, you can learn some basic photography lessons and get the most out of your powerful camera. Search the Internet and learn about Exposure Compensation, Multiple shots (fps), Timer, Bracketing, proper use of flash. Also use tripod and take photos with low ISO for stationary objects or for landscapes.
If you train yourself, any camera will help you get nice photos in most situations.
Good luck.

Best filming camera to film movies?

Q. Hi! In 2015, some school mates and I are planning to shoot a remake of The Breakfast Club. It will be the 30 year anniversary and we are excited to start. Anyways, I am looking for a great filming camera for movies. I know it'll be pricey but I seem to get 0 help when I just google it. I also want to know how to make the footage have an 80s feel, quality wise. I will be using the camera that any of you suggest for a number of years and films to come, and I would also appreciate if you have any movie editing software? Thank you!

A. I am guessing you are looking to use some digital camera to film. If you are going to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a professional movie camera, please ignore rest of my answer.

Most of us know that most compact cameras, or smart-phones like iPhones, are not good at video recording. If light is good, they do an okay job. When light is dull, they are almost unusable. Same is true for most consumer SLR cameras with kit lenses. So what do we do to take high quality High-Definition videos? Should we use an HD camcoder or a pocket camcorder like Sony Bloggie or UltraHD?

Most compact cameras don't do a good job in low light- for still images or for videos. If you zoom in, the shake becomes too obvious. Most DSLRs will do a little better as light level goes down but many of them will not auto focus during videos (because of the mirror which needs to be flipped for focusing). You can bypass this with a mirrorless camera which can auto focus, like Panasonic G or GF series but with Auto focus, you lose the control over which part of the frame, or on which person to focus on. If you have 3 persons in a frame, your Auto-Focus will not know which one you want to focus on. Why not? Silly, it is Auto-focus! It focuses by itself!! That is the reason you never see a professional movie or videos done with Autofocus.

Now read an article here which can give you nice tips:

Will Sony cameras stay this price until they are sold out, or will the sale end on Feb 2?
Q. I'm confused. It says, "Now through February 2, 2013, or while supplies last, save $200 instantly on qualifying Sony Alpha Digital SLR cameras."

I know this sale started in December and it said it would expire in January, but then they moved it up to February. Does this mean they are just trying to sell these certain models until they are gone? Or does the sale go away on Feb 2? I don't know if I need to buy now if I want the $200 off price or if it's no hurry. I also don't know if I should wait for the a58 as it might be better. Maybe they are selling these off to put out new models? But the a37 is also discounted and it hasn't been out that long.
There's nothing I dislike about them, but if Sony is going to add the mirror-flipping feature and/or the OLED viewfinder in the a58, then I want to wait for that.

A. Lets say they have 100 cameras to sell.
If they sell all 100 by 25th January - the sale ends
If they reach 3rd Feb and still have 20 left, then the sale also ends and those 20 will be sold at the full price.

Why is the Leica M8 so good?

Q. Why is the Leica M8 good what makes it Unique from the Dslr's?

A. Well, in a lot of ways, in 2013, the Leica M8 is actually not so good by current standards. It's a crop sensor digital camera with, what is now considered, poor high ISO noise redux. The M9 is another story however.

The reason the M8 used to be considered a great digital camera and still is if you're on a budget, is that it is a rangefinder camera. That in itself makes it unique from DSLR's because it is simply not a Single Lens Reflex camera.

If you want to study up on the differences between rangefinders and SLR's, there are hundreds of in-depth discussions all over the internet. Essentially it boils down to rangefinders being smaller, quieter, better at manual focusing in low light and due to the lack of a flipping mirror, viewing is more of the moment as well as handheld slow shutter speeds more free of vibration. The problem is that there are limitations to composition and use of macro and longer telephoto lenses as well as zoom lenses with rangefinders. Also, some folks just don't like focusing through them.

Whats-more, Leica build quality far exceeds those of most popular manufacturers. They hand-assemble their camera and lenses with higher quality materials and more tightly fitting parts. This results in cameras and lenses that feel very enjoyable to use but also that last through extreme abuse and continue to work well for decades.

Leica is also world renowned for the high optical performance of their lenses. They are virtually devoid of optical abberations commonly found in Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus and other more popular lensmakers products.

Hope this is useful!

What kind of camera should I buy?
Q. I wouldn't like to spend over $800
I need a camera that's good quality..better than your average digital camera and that can both take photos and record video (that's not as important but it would be nice)
I would like to be able to use it for motion photos, landscape, night life etc.
Basically the most important thing is picture quality :)
Any ideas. Thanks!

A. Having used several DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, I like Pentax K-01 as a great camera- one of the best image quality out then in below $1000 cameras. Pentax used to sell for around $900 but their gamble with the style backfired so they are clearing them out. They currently sell for around $400 with a nice 40mm 2.8 lens.

which is the most liked camera in U.S in 2013 and is there camera that prints th photo right away in full size?

Q. thanks.

A. The most popular may not be the same as the most liked.

Many people love their P&S camera or the ones on their cell phones (mobiles)

The most used cameras by professionals are the Nikon D series and Canon 1D series cameras. A smaller number use Hasselblad and Mamiya digital cameras

As far as instant print cameras, they produce much smaller images than what you are calling "full size". The closest to doing that would be the Fujifilm Instax 210. It produces an instant print on film.

* Film size : 108(W) x 86(H) mm
* Picture size : 99(W) x 62(H) mm

This may sound like a stupid question, but hear me out?
Q. There are two .jpg images. Each has the precise number of pixels – e.g., the dimensions are the same.

These were images taken by a professional photographer so presumably he had good equipment, lighting, etc.

On was about 500KB, and decent, but a bit blurry. The other was 10 MB and crystal clear. You could see the dew on the blades of grass, the individual strands of the people’s hair, etc.

I know this sounds strange, but given the precise amount of physical information, pixels, were used, where is that additional 9.5 MB coming from and what goes into making it a better image?

BQ: What is primary reason digital images look better in 2013 than 2003 – technology, or was the technology available in 2003, but the data size of the files precluded them from widespread use?
OK. I thought if two images were say, 1000 x 1000 pixels, and if you viewed said image on a 23 inch monitor with 1920 x 1080 resolution, that they would be *exactly* the same physical size on that monitor.

A. It means the .jpg is the same size,"pixels" have different meanings, size and resolution. The computer can make bigger pixles smaller, either to save space or because the camera resolution is to small eg. 2.2 mp or 20 mp. (megapixles) the size of the file is different because there are way more smaller pixles in the one that the other. Therdore higher resolution. The year difference is because the cameras back then only had like , 1 megapixle and now pro cameras have up to 100 megapixles

Which Canon DSLR Lens to buy?

Q. I am going to purchase the Canon EOS 60D, and I'm not sure whether I should purchase the EF-S 18-55mm lens or the 50mm/1.8 lens. Primarily, I'm going to use the 60D for filmmaking and of course photography as well, I'm trying to decide on these two lenses as they are within my budget. Which lens has more range/which is more appropriate for filmmaking?

Advice from photographers and filmmakers are gladly appreciated.

A. First, lose the word "film" from your vocabulary. Digital cameras shoot video NOT film. You want to be a videographer.

Although the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 zoom will offer you more versatility its not a good lens for use indoors. Its a slow, variable aperture zoom that does fine outdoors on a sunny day but indoors you'll have to use a very high ISO and a high ISO means increased digital noise - not good for your videos.
You'll need a lot of light to successfully take indoor videos with a lower ISO.

On the flip side, the EF 50mm f1.8 is more suitable for indoor use IF you're in a large space. The problem indoors is the narrow angle of view of the 50mm lens on your Canon 60D. The 50mm lens is great for portraits with your camera though.

Although more expensive a better alternative would be the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 zoom. Its a much better lens than the 18-55mm and more suitable for indoor videos. Since its a constant f2.8 from 17mm to 55mm the shutter speed stays the same - unlike the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 which will cause a decrease in shutter speed as you zoom from 18mm to 55mm.

At B&H - http://www.bhphotovideo.com - you can buy the Canon 60D body for $799.99 after a $200.00 'Instant Savings' from B&H that ends 02/02/2013.

At B&H the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 zoom is $1.059.00 after a $120.00 'Instant Savings' from B&H that also ends 02/02/2013.

This site will show you the narrow angle of view of a 50mm lens on your 60D.

Professional camcorder 2013?
Q. Hi several years ago, HVR-Z1U was my main camera but since this one is too old and still need to use by film, I wanted to buy professional camcorder. I'm going to buy it in B&H but not sure which one is good choice. the price will be between $2000~3500. Can you show me the recent professional camcorder?
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ns=p_PRICE_2|0

A. Film cameras us film. Once the film is exposed, , in a dark place, the film is removed from the camera and sent in a light-tight container for chemical processing. For editing, a splicer is used. Or, individual frames are scanned (one by on) and digitized for use in a computer editing system. Typically, film cameras do not record audio. Sound is recorded externally.

The Sony HVR-Z1 is a digital camcorder. It record high quality, low compression DV and HDV video to miniDV tape. It is a digital video camcorder. There is no film involved. The Z1 has a built-in mic and also XLR connectors for external mics. It has a 72mm diameter lens and a 3CCD imaging chip that is 1/3".

My definition of "professional camcorder":
Lens diameter 70mm or larger.
Imaging chip is 3CCD or 3CMOS, 1/3 inch or larger.
XLR audio inputs.
Your Z1 meets all these requirements.

In your price range, we have:
* Sony HDR-FX1000 (it is the prosumer sibling to the Z1; uses miniDV tape; has only a 3.5mm stereo audio-in connecter - add a BeachTek or juicedLink XLR adapter is needed).

* The Sony HVR-Z5 (replaced the Z1), PMW160, HXRNX5, all the NEX and NX series camcorders are outside your budget.

* The Canon XF300 series is outside your budget.

* The Panasonic AG-AC series camcorders that meet the above criteria are outside your budget.

* The JVC GY-HM600 might fit your budget.

I think you are better of sticking with the Z1 - unless it is broken.

When will digital camera wireless charging ever be announced?

Q. There have been announcements about phone wireless charging and ultrabook wireless charging which was just announced which was in CES 2013 but they did not announce anything about digital camera wireless charging so when will it be announced?
Tomorrow is not the right answer I doubt it

A. Tomorrow

Which ever day it is now then the answer will always be tomorrow cos tomorrow never comes!

Put it another way - the only folk who know are the camera manufacturers - anyone else is just crystal ball gazing.

I am not sure I understand this, do you?

Q. Received this email from a friend today:
A cosmic trigger event is occurring on the 17th of October 2006. This is the beginning, one of many trigger events to come between now and 2013. An ultraviolet (UV) pulse beam radiating from higher dimensions in universe-2 will cross paths with the Earth on this day. Earth will remain approximately within this UV beam for 17 hours of your time. This beam resonates with the heart chakra, it is radiant flourescent in nature, blue/magenta in colour. Although it resonates in this frequency band, it is above the colour frequency spectrum of your universe-1 which you, Earth articulate in. However due to the nature of your soul and soul groups operating from Universe-2 frequency bands it will have an effect.
The effect is every thought and emotion will be amplified intensely one million-fold. Yes, we will repeat, all will be amplified one millions time and more.
Every thought, every emotion, every intent, every will, no matter if it is good, bad, ill, positive, negative, will be amplified one million times in strength.
What does this mean ?
Since all matter manifest is due to your thoughts, i.e. what you focus on, this beam will accelerate these thoughts and solidify them at an accelerated rate making them manifest a million times faster than they normally would.
For those that do not comprehend. Your thoughts, what you focus on create your reality. This UV beam thus can be a dangerous tool. For if you are focused on thoughts which are negative to your liking they will manifest into your reality almost instantly. Then again this UV beam can be a gift if you choose it to be. Mission-1017 requires approximately one million people to focus on positive, benign, good willed thoughts for themselves and the Earth and Humanity on this day.
Your thoughts can be of any nature of your choosing, but remember whatever you focus on will be made manifest in a relatively faster than anticipated time frame. To some the occurrences may almost be bordering on the miracle. All we ask is positive thoughts of love, prosperity, healing, wealth, kindness, gratitude be focused on. This UV beam comes into full affect for 17 hrs on the 17th of October 2006. No matter what time zone you are in the hours are approximately 10:17 am on the 17th of October to 1:17 am on the 18th October. The peak time will be 17:10 (5:10 pm) on the 17th October. You do not need to be in a meditative state through out this time, though would be beneficial. The main key time no matter what time zone you are in will be the peak time of 17:10 (5:10 pm). Perhaps at this time if you can find a peaceful spot or location to focus. The optimum is out in the vicinity of grounded nature, likened to that of a large tree or next to the ocean waves.
Focus on whatever it is you desire. What is required for the benefit of all Earth and Humanity is positive thoughts of loving nature.
We call this UV beam trigger event, .. gateway. Please forward this message to as many people as you know who will use this cosmic trigger event to focus positive, good willed thoughts. We require approximately 1-million people across globe to actively participate in this event. Please use whatever communication mediums you have at your disposal. Reach out to as many people as possible. We require 1-million plus people at the least to trigger a shift for humanity from separation and fragmentation to one of unification and oneness. This is your opportunity to take back what is rightfully yours i.e. Peace and Prosperity for all Earth and Mankind. This is a gift, a life line from your universe so to speak, an answer to your prayers. What you do with it and whether or not you choose to participate is your choice.

A. The 10/17 otherwise 818 gateway will be resonating a beam approximately one
and half times the size of earth.

i..e As Earth spinning on its axis passes through this beam, it will be
immersed in it for approx 36 hours in total. This makes each point on the
globe to be directly influenced by this beam for an avg 17hrs. Some areas
will actually have more than 17hrs.

The peak of 5:10 pm applies for all countries and timezones due to the above
average. This timing was given as an approximation to assist those who wish
to focus for a short time span. Ideally the longer one can focus their
attention during this time the greater the results.

For every human immersed in thoughts/focused on and in unconsitional love
and peace, there are 6000 others approx focused in fear, trepidation, anger,
hate, war, lust, power, greed, poverty, lack etc. This was the ratio the
Blue gave me when questioned why one million are required. Essentially it is
to balance the equation. yep 1 in every 6000.

The way i understood it this 1 in 6000 ratio is thoughts focused on
unconditional love and peace resonate/attract 6000 times more powerfully
than any other thoughts. i.e. require 6000 times less energy or other words
are 6000 times more efficient. Perhaps why only very few attain mastership
and why it is far easier and effortless to be in these thoughts as opposed
to other thoughts or frames of mind...

Many have emailed asking how long for results to come into affect from the
10/17 gateway? This will depend on the number of people participating above
and the thoughts of global consciousness on that day. However by Jan/Feb
2007 we should begin to see the results either way, for better or worse if i
can use those words.

Expect by 17th Oct for some big DISTRACTION generating fear and frenzy. If
not, then this will be a positive sign.

Many are really hassling for technical data on what exactly this 10/17 - 818
gateway/beam is. The best i could understand it from blue voice is this.

Our sector of the milky way is currently immersed in what many term the
photon belt or menasic radiation. With in this radiation there are tiny
spectral lines of emmissions very much like that to what we term
Lyman/Balmer Hydrogen emmission/absorption lines. (see eg picture)

The above is our observable light wavelength (colour spectrum) and the black
lines are what is called emmission/absorption lines for hydrogen. ie. the
points where hydrogen is resonate within our colour spectrum.

Although this does not represent the photon belt, it does give you an idea
of what this 818 gateway is. which is imagine one of these tiny black lines
which Earth is about to pass through. Next year there will be a 727 gateway
but more on that next year. (the first line on the left is the 818 gateway
in the UV region, the 2nd line is representative of the 727 gateway in 2007.
It wn't be until 2010/2011 before we move out of the UV coded region.

According to Blue we entered the photon radiation belt approx mid 90's and
now we are about to encounter the first emmission line which is very ultra
dense with UV photon radiation. The Blue reckon that the above Colour
spectrum with the hydrogen spectral lines is very reflective of what our
photon radiation belt is like. If you noticed there are 7 lines all taking
us up tp 2012-2013 with the last emission line in the "red" region. (Blue
call this last region infrared, but doesn't look it to me).

According to Blue as we approach this red/infrared region in 2012 and
beyond, every day natural occurences of what one calls "orbs" will become
common place where as now only seen by very few and usually with digital
cameras.

I hope the above gives those who have been garnering for more technical
info. The above is the best i could do to translate from Blue with much
effort.

Many had questionable concerns regarding this 818 gateway being of UV
nature. Your Earth was not created with an ozone layer.

The Ozone layer is a by product of dark times, ignorance, fear and lust for
power.

It is a veil upon the eyes of your souls. It veils and keeps the codes of
DNA transmutation from you.
Eat of the tree of life but not of the tree of knowledge as the eli-jehovan
war lords wished upon you.

Now that you are maturing, like an embryo awakening in the womb/egg, the
ozone layer is dissipating. The EGG must hatch as the bird tribe must now
leave, fly-off or else consume itself and die stuck within the EGG. Mother
Earth is hatching, metaphorically. As it does the veils are been removed and
the UV codes are reaching your souls and you are seeing the son-light for
what it really is.

UV light will be the filter, separate the chaff from the wheat. Only
frequencies of love and peace will survive the UV radiation, all else will
burn away like a cancer.

Where was the light before it existed? where did it come from? Light can not
be stored and can not be frozen in time and space. It occupies no volume and
has no mass. It is the same with thought, beyond space and time, in the void
full of creative potential.

Give Love and Peace a Chance on the 17th of Oct 2006.

Good DSLR camera for Europe?
Q. I will be going to Europe (Paris and Spain) for school next spring break in 2013. I want a good quality DSLR camera for the trip and for later use. It will be a present either for graduating or Christmas so I can go up to $900. Anyone know any good ones?

A. I would recommend the Pentax Kr . This camera comes with a 28-to-55mm lens. And a 50-to-200mm lens when sold in kit form. I highly recommend buying the camera "and" 50-200mm lens together. I purchased the previous model (Kx) which came with only the 28-55mm. And I bought an off brand lens 28-200mm, that was a mistake! So if a DSLR is your hearts desire buy it with both lenses together. It will be cheaper in the long run. My first thought with your question, is does this person really need a Digital Single Lens Reflex or is he just responding to the questions on this forum where some of the "die-hard" pro's recommend DSLR's as the only type of camera to own. So with that in mind let me throw out some thoughts for you to ponder.
1. If you want an excellent camera that takes needle sharp photos, there are many "bridge" cameras that take excellent pictures, but have only one zoom lens which does it all, from close-ups to long telephoto shots. It seems to me it would be easier to tote this type than a camera with extra lenses, and accessories. I am referring to a camera like the Canon Powershot series "SX ?? IS. The current one is the SX40 IS, But previous models may be available used at attractive prices, those models are the SX30IS, the SX20IS, and the SX10IS. Remember these cameras cannot change their lens. You have to be satisfied with the lens that comes with the camera.

Good Luck!

Don't you find it odd that very few photos of George Zimmerman after his trial seem to exist?

Q. Think about it, probably the most talked about person of 2013 outside of Syrian president Bashar Assad and President Obama, and I'll be damned if I can find a picture of George Zimmerman after his trial.

I mean, in a day where nearly everyone has instant access to a super high quality digital camera complete with internet access and no one has photographed any pictures of George Zimmerman as he is saving people from car accidents, getting pulled over for speeding, or even simply gassing his car or getting groceries. You'd think that social media should be flooded with

You'd think that at least the paparazzi working for People Magazine would have caught a photo if him at the very least.

Am I wrong about this? Am I simply missing these photos on social media sites or are social media sites purposely keeping Zimmerman photos off their networks?

A. Are you serious? He was just arrested two days ago for punching his father in law in the nose. His wife just filed for divorce partly because she's tired of living in a trailer in the woods.

Getting all of my film speed with Rodinal?
Q. I've been playing around with different films and developers and combinations for the past couple of months. I want to branch out from HC-110 and see what else is out there, and what else I like.

I've read a lot about Rodinal not delivering full film speed, and I pretty sure that's what I'm encountering here. It seems like whenever I soup in Rodinal at the standard times given on the Massive Dev Chart (a good place to start, at least), the negatives come out around 2-3 stops dark. I don't care so much for test rolls, but I shot a portrait session with medium format PanF+, developed in Rodinal, and lost at least 4 or 5 frames that could have been great. They were just too thin to recover.

Anyone have any advice here? I just want my exposures to come out the way they would if I was using HC-110. I'm not underexposing in camera, it's definitely something to do with the developer. I'm using 1:50 so far, and souping as documented on my little blog I use to keep track of my experiments:

http://filmsanddevelopers.blogspot.com/2013/05/adox-adonal-rodinal-and-ilford-panf.html
http://filmsanddevelopers.blogspot.com/2013/04/adox-adonal-rodinal-and-ilford-delta-100.html
I'm sorry, let me clarify: The negatives are thin. The images themselves (after being scanned or printed) are dark. Meaning, underexposed. I didn't state that very well.

Thanks for the info though, I'll run some more tests.

A. Like more density on the negatives you work with do you?

A photographer in Alaska used black and white film which he exposed to have a minimum of emulsion left on the film back after developing.

If it was my roll of film, I'd have had a heart attack and died on the spot! And if I had survived that I would have had my light meters. handheld and built into cameras, looked at plus the shutter speeds and lens apertures and then the film developers!

But back to all seriousness, this fella, lets call him Bill, also modified his print processing procedure, buying and using a digital enlarger timer and with closing the enlarger lens down, printed some of the most grain free images with great tonal scale! Both pics taken out of doors and pics taken indoors in low light conditions

Most lab rats would close their enlarger lenses down a stop or two and use seconds to expose proof sheets and prints.
This fella closed the lens down a few stops more and used tenths and hundredths of seconds as exposure times!

Plus had many more pic taking opportunities than the rest of us using Kodak Tri-X films or Illford's similar b&w product, pushing films to a paltry asa 800, 1200 or 1600 and exposing films for shadow detail.

This I beleive is where Rodinal and other developers used for developing b&w films rated to higher asa's got their so called bad reputations. The photographers could not or did not know how to modify their print processing procedure to take advantage of ther film developers ability to make such delicate looking negatives and the higher quality grain free images that resulted.

What Would be a Suitable Camera for Me?

Q. What are some really good cameras? I am an aspiring photographer, but I have your run-in-the-mill crappy camera. Next summer, I will be taking a school trip to Dublin, London, and Paris. I want a great quality camera for my trip but don't know where to look.
This is my ideal camera:
http://www.thephoblographer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Chris-Gampat-The-Phoblographer-Nikon-D5200-S1-and-J3-first-impressions-CES-2013-1-of-17ISO-16001-180-sec-at-f-4.0.jpg

Is that a good camera? Or do you think I should get a different one?

A. Yes, a Nikon DSLR is an excellent camera. Your picture doesn't say which model the camera is, but all Nikon DSLR's are excellent. But then so are Canon's, Sony's, Pentax and Olympus. Look over the Nikon line and decide which meets your budget.
http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Digital-SLR-Cameras/index.page

If you can afford the D7000, wait a few months, the newer D7100 probably will be announced and you might get a price break.

How to audition for SM, JYP, and YG?
Q. So, I would like to know how to audition for SM, JYP, and YG. I already checked their official websites but I'm still confused on how to apply, as there are many ways to audition. I know for SM you can apply via email and post if you can't make it to the live auditions (global and open). But when people say online audition do they mean email audition? And to apply for global you can apply one of 3 ways: email, every sing, and online. But, are email auditions different than email applying for global auditions? And for JYP, I don't think they have global auditions, or am I wrong? The only way to apply is live in Seoul, online (only members can right?), or post, right? And YG why do they only have Global (last time I checked was in Thailand) and post! Do they have email (online auditions)? Thanks and I hope you can answer all my questions. Also,
1) Where does SM usually hold their global auditions?
2) Do you have to attach video file (dancing), MP3 file (singing), and photos? Or you can just attach two (like only photos and singing or only photos and dancing)?
I really need the answers badly because I'm planning to audition and missed out this year but hopefully will go in the future :). Wish me luck!!

A. Hey open this website ! This is really helpful to answer your question and how-to apply for SM audition :)

I don't know about YG and JYP , but i heard JYP have global audition in some country O_o i read it somewhere in y!answeer .
I've been searching in google but i can't find any YG email address to send our audition application , i heard YG only open auditions face-to-face it means they really wanna see your talent , not by video , but face-to-face .

I only find their address for sending a tape that contains our audition video
YG Audition
Sangsu-dong 394-10 Hoseong Building 3F

Is Nikon d40 still a good camera in 2013?
Q. Found a used Nikon d40 I might buy. Not sure about a camera with fewer megapixels than my phone(6.1). Anyone with experience with this camera let me know how well the pictures turn out? How large can I enlarge a photo before it starts to look pixelated? I currently use a film slr (k1000) and a digital bridge camera(16.1 mp fujifilm) and just want to be sure I'm not taking a step back.

A. Eric, in my opinion you should skip the ancient, outdated Nikon D40. Yes it was a good camera in its day buts its a 7 yr. old model and DSLR technology has passed it by.

I suggest considering the Pentax K-30 DSLR since it can use any lenses you have for your Pentax K1000. Pentax introduced the "K" lenses mount on your K1000 in 1975 and its still used today on their DSLR cameras.

Can most digital cameras now all do full hd 1080p video recording?
Q.

A. Most of them do 1080p HD video. However please be aware that most compact cameras, or smart-phones like iPhones, are not good at video recording. If light is good, they do an okay job. When light is dull, they are almost unusable. If you zoom in and do video, there can be lot of shake. You may be better off with iPhone or some digital camcorder that offers 30-40x zoom.

digital camera that takes VERY CLEAR CLOSEUPS for under $100?

Q. People who know cameras please help me find a very inexpensive digital camera that will not blur or motion bur and takes high resolution photos of close-up/small subjects. I definitely can't afford anything over $100, but $50 would be even better. I'm looking for the least expensive option that takes super super clear closeups basically.

I don't need a lot of storage space, just as long as it has a memory card slot. Would also be nice if it was wall-chargeable (aka you can plug it into an adapter to charge instead of a battery) but I don't know if that's possible. I don't know resolution jargon, but my current camera takes pictures that are roughly the size of an entire computer screen, so anything that resolution or better is good for me. It just blurs a lot, so that's why I need a new one.

Recommend away! Thank you!!!!

A. Canon PowerShot A2300 is an excellent camcorder. This camera comes with 16 megapixels. It also has an excellent 28mm wide angle lens with digital image stabilizer and a 720p HD video. This camera shoots awesome pictures, videos and have been one of the top recommended in 2013 so far. It would be perfect for your youtube videos. It is sold at amazon for $88.72 which i think is a decent price for such quality. I have provided links below for you.
Canon PowerShot A2300 16.0 MP Digital Camera with 5x Digital Image Stabilized Zoom 28mm Wide-Angle Lens with 720p HD Video Recording (Red)

What are some really cheap HD cameras under 200$?
Q.

A. The best camera under $200 is currently the Nikon P310.

Well, maybe under $200. Nikon had a $100 instant rebate that expired on Mar 30, 2013. Check back periodically to see if that rebate is extended or not. Otherwise, you may be spending about $50 more, which is still a good deal.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/842326-REG/Nikon_P310B_Coolpix_P300_Digital_Camera.html

This camera normally sells for $300+, but it has just been discontinued for it's replacement, the P330. Since this is an annual (or semi-annual) event with most camera manufacturers (of compact cameras), you can often pick up an outstanding camera at a low price when they first become discontinued.

However, when this happens you have to act farily quickly as the stock is limited to what is on the dealer's shelves.

Why do I like the P310?

First, it has manual exposure controls (prorgam, shutter/aperture priority, manual), This gives you maximum flexibility in composing your photos.

Second, it has a fast f/1.8 lens, which rivals even the better grade DSLR lenses. What does this mean? Superior low-light performance, as the camera will gather 2 to 4 times more light than the typical compact camera.

It also does up to 1920x1080p @ 30fps "full" HD with stereo audio. But I am not much into video so that is not something I often use. If I want to do video, I have a camcorder for that.

And I own this camera, so it is not something I would recommend without having some experience with it. While the zoom range of this camera is less than those ridiculously high-powered zooms on bridge cameras, the lens on the P310 is vastly superior to those cameras. So while you won't be able to take a photo of a bird from a mile away, you will be able to take better photos within the range of the P310's zoom.

What Canon compact digital camera should I buy -- either A4000 or A2600?

Q. Which should I buy? ...it is between the Canon A4000 IS or A2600?

Technical Benefit Differences of A4000 IS the A2600 lacks I see:
1. More zoom range (8x vs.5x)
2. Optical Image Stabilization/Intelligent Image Stabilization
3. Better Macro Capability (1 cm vs. 3 cm)

Technical Benefit Differences of A2600 the A4000 lacks I see:
1. Longer Battery Life (ECO Mode -- up to 30% more pictures per battery charge)
2. Wider Aperture (f/2.8 vs. f/3.0)
3. Lower Light Exposure Sensitivity in Low Light Mode only (ISO 6400 vs. ISO 1600)
4. Digital Image Stabilization -- Yes, an added feature the A4000 lacks; but greatly inferior to Optical Image Stabilization/Intelligent Image Stabilization

The physical size, dimensions, and weight differences, are very minor to me; both relatively small. Other than these differences above, they are technically the same compact camera. The A2600 is this years (2013) new Canon compact model release -- highest model of the newest of the A-series. The A4000 IS is last years (2012) Canon compact model release -- overall highest still for this years A-series lineup.

This is just an opinion question, but if you could justify your answers as to why YOU would pick one over the other with reason, that would be great! I am stumped. I am torn between these two. Thanks!
Let me add...

If you ask what kind of pictures I generally take, I take all kinds like landscapes, portraits, close-ups, night scenes, action, etc.. Yes, a general use camera.

A. No need to enumerate what you shoot. It is expected for all cameras to do them all anyway.

Judging from those spec differences, I'd go for the A2600. Battery life would be a huge issue and it would be nice to see Canon actually address the shortness of it once and for all. Wider apertures allow for longer shooting pleasure after the sun has gone down. It also helps blur backgrounds more easily for closeup portraits.

Although I personally avoid going higher than ISO 1600, it's good to know there's more in case I really need it. Image stabilization would be great though for making razor sharp shots but it's not really that important as I am confident my hands can still hold on steadily.

How can I achieve this photograph effect?

Q. I'm kind of getting into photography, not a big camera guy meaning I don't have a $600 Canon or Nikon, I use a regular digital camera and then touch up the pictures in Photoshop CS6 and Color Efex Pro 4..

I really like the lighting effect used in these pictures, is there any way I could come close to creating it, maybe mixing different channels or something?

A. You can move the slider to adjust the saturation to overly saturate it and use the brightness/contrast slider to adjust those two things in order to make it too dark and have too much contrast. Once the picture looks as terrible as the ones you posted you're all set.

What should I do to get this kind of photos?
Q. Hi! I was wondering if you could give me some advice.

I wanted to buy a good camera this summer (I'm kind of tired of only taking photos from my iPhone!) and was wondering if someone could give me advice on what to buy,

I really love effects like this and was hoping to get a compact-as-possible camera that could achieve effects like this:

If you could give me some feedback, that'd be great!
Actually any kind of advice would be greatly appreciated haha
Thanks!
Do I need any kind of special filters?

A. I phones get old quickly. They aren't really cameras, they are phones with a crappy lens and a small sensor. Not the same animal at all.

As you want a small camera, I would suggest a bridge camera - one with a fixed lens that still has manual controls. A review of various bridge cameras appears here:

http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/equipment/advice/501485/best-bridge-camera-of-2013.html

You may find that limiting quickly, in which case a full DSLR could do the job. With a DSLR you can change lenses on the body.

The thing that matters most is that camera has manual or semi manual controls: the aperture, shutter speed and ISO are controlled by YOU, not by the camera. Then YOU have to learn to use the camera properly. The camera takes pictures, YOU make them by understanding how to balance your exposure to the lighting situation you are in. Sometimes you have to compromise, and knowing what to keep in and what to give up is a huge part of photography. The camera cannot do that. It just records what you point it at, and at whatever settings you program in, or, gods forbid, what it thinks best on Auto. It is not the camera, it is the photographer!

Two of the samples you posted had some issues relating to exposure, although the Golden Gate Bridge was pretty close. The feet shot was interesting, but the reflection on the floor was so blown out that it completely ruined the shot. The christmas stocking shot was both under and overexposed simultaneously and the coffee shot has composition problems - what is the thing on the lower edge? Exposure was dead on though.

All need a clean up in photoshop (or similar) to get rid of the grey mud over the image. The white and black points need to be set, which will eliminate the grey cast over the images. This is a separate issue from the camera - digital images generally need some post processing work to correctly set the density/contrast.

Whatever camera you end up choosing, learn to use it on fully manual.

Edit: You could definitely use a circular polarizer. Other than that, no filters are needed unless you're old school and want a UV for your lens as a protector. I use one, LOTS of people don't as it can degrade image quality. I feel it's a fair trade.

camera package advice?

Q. So im looking at packages such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/T3i-75-300mm-Telephoto-Accessory-Kit/dp/B005KUGXJW/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1368422743&sr=8-11&keywords=canon+rebel+t3i+packages
does this look like a good deal? do you know of any packages that come with canon brand accessories? Im looking for stuff under 750$ and want more lenses, filters, a memory card, and possibly a remote. thanks

A. http://www.amazon.com/T3i-75-300mm-Telephoto-Accessory-Kit/dp/B005KUGXJW/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1368422743&sr=8-11&keywords=canon+rebel+t3i+packages

This package isn't worth the money. A couple of flimsy tripods I wouldn't trust using with a point & shoot compact digital camera much less a DSLR. Canon's worst lens ever, the 75-300mm. A couple of cheap image degrading screw in attachments. Forget about this so-called deal.

Look at B&H for better deals. B&H has the T3i w/18-55mm zoom lens for $599.00 after a $50.00 'Instant Savings' that ends June 1, 2013. B&H also has a two lens kit - T3i w/18-55mm zoom and 55-250mm zoom - for $599.00 after a $200.00 'Instant Savings' that ends June 8, 2013.

English homework... persuasive essay.. helpp!?

Q. I have to write an English essay, a persuasive one... it has to be on a controversy topic... i chose video game violence causing children to become violent. I need some quotes that are short and easy to read. I am also having to do a 2 minute speech on my topic in front of a camera and my English class. I don't want to use super big words because that will make my essay boring. I really want quotes for and against this topic that are easy to understand. Thanks for all the help. Also if anyone could, i need reasons for why people think this is true and untrue. Thanks. P.S. i normally don't need help on papers i write because it normally comes naturally but I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place for the first time. I'm stumped. Thanks again...!!!

A. Here's a quote which takes the "no" position:
"We know from history, that tragic events often spark moral panics that target media. Recall the tremendous hue and cry following Columbine, where the predators in the mass violence were portrayed as loners who were addicted to violent video games, or the recent descriptions of the Newtown gunman as someone who was isolated and played with digital media for hours a day.

But as appealing as the anecdotal evidence is, empirically these findings don't hold up. Comprehensive, scientifically conducted reviews of the video game violence field such as those called for by some policymakers and advocates already exist: the U.S. Supreme Court as well as highly credible reviews by Australia and Sweden have all recently concluded that the existing video game research could not support direct links between violent entertainment and societal violence."
Michael Levine and Christopher Ferguson, Huffington Post, April 5 2013

And here's a quote that takes the "yes" position:
"Frequently playing violent video games is “strongly associated” with aggression in juveniles who have had trouble with the law, according to a new study co-authored by three Iowa State University professors and two other researchers.....“Playing violent video games is a risk factor for aggressive behavior,” said Matt DeLisi, an Iowa State University sociology professor and one of the paper’s five authors. “It is not the only factor, but is a factor.” "
from an article by Daniel P. Finney in the DesMoinesRegister.com, March 27 2013

Both authors quote scientific studies, and the two of them come up with opposite conculusions!
Good luck :)

What is a really good advanced point and shoot digital camera?

Q. My old camera, a Canon Power Shot S5IS is acting weird. Time for a new one I think.

What a a really good advanced point and shot digital camera that would be a step or two up from the Power Shot S5 IS?

My daughter shows horses, so I need something that can capture moving subject well and is good in low light conditions!!!

I want a camera that feels/looks like a SLR, but is not. I am thinking about a Nikon Coolpix L820or maybe an Olympus Stylus SP-820UZ?

Thanks!

A. You'd do better to put a Tamron 18-270 or 18-250 (not 18-200) lens on a small DSLR body like a Sony A37, or other brand of your choice to keep it affordable chose an earlier camera model. The lens can stay with you when you upgrade provided that you don't jump ship from the brand. They can all be used in auto mode just like a P&S only you can develop your skills at your own pace.

http://www.amazon.com/Tamron-18-270mm-3-5-6-3-Built-Cameras/dp/B004FN1W2S/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1375040281&sr=1-1&keywords=tamron+18-270+sony

But look at the dinky little DSLR Canon recently put on the market:
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/07/26/just-posted-canon-eos-100d-rebel-sl1-review

But if you must have a bridge camera then Pentax made the X5 just for people like you:
