Which Canon DSLR Lens to buy?

Q. I am going to purchase the Canon EOS 60D, and I'm not sure whether I should purchase the EF-S 18-55mm lens or the 50mm/1.8 lens. Primarily, I'm going to use the 60D for filmmaking and of course photography as well, I'm trying to decide on these two lenses as they are within my budget. Which lens has more range/which is more appropriate for filmmaking?

Advice from photographers and filmmakers are gladly appreciated.

A. First, lose the word "film" from your vocabulary. Digital cameras shoot video NOT film. You want to be a videographer.

Although the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 zoom will offer you more versatility its not a good lens for use indoors. Its a slow, variable aperture zoom that does fine outdoors on a sunny day but indoors you'll have to use a very high ISO and a high ISO means increased digital noise - not good for your videos.
You'll need a lot of light to successfully take indoor videos with a lower ISO.

On the flip side, the EF 50mm f1.8 is more suitable for indoor use IF you're in a large space. The problem indoors is the narrow angle of view of the 50mm lens on your Canon 60D. The 50mm lens is great for portraits with your camera though.

Although more expensive a better alternative would be the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 zoom. Its a much better lens than the 18-55mm and more suitable for indoor videos. Since its a constant f2.8 from 17mm to 55mm the shutter speed stays the same - unlike the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 which will cause a decrease in shutter speed as you zoom from 18mm to 55mm.

At B&H - http://www.bhphotovideo.com - you can buy the Canon 60D body for $799.99 after a $200.00 'Instant Savings' from B&H that ends 02/02/2013.

At B&H the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 zoom is $1.059.00 after a $120.00 'Instant Savings' from B&H that also ends 02/02/2013.

This site will show you the narrow angle of view of a 50mm lens on your 60D.

How long before this camera is considered obsolete?

Q. My son is a high school senior. Next year he wants to go to community college and live at home (at least that is reasonably affordable) instead of going away to school. He wants to take an expensive major however. Video production. We have been able to save about $5,000 towards his education. We are not wealthy people. The rest will have to come from loans and maybe a grant or scholarship.
We are looking at some "entry level" pro cameras in the $1500-1800 range. That's about 1/3 of our savings for his education.
Models include these:

and
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/749467-REG/Canon_4922B002_XA10_HD_Professional_Camcorder.html

My concern is he starts September 2013 so these products may not even be available by then or others will be available. We hope he graduates May 2015. He tells us when he graduates he will maybe find a freelance job or shoot local cable news, build up some experience, maybe after 2 years go for a B.A. at least part time.
Is anything we buy him in 2013 (summer) going to be any use to him as a working professional in 2015 (summer)? So let's say you are a class of 2012 graduate with an AAS in video production. The camera you purchased in the summer of 2010 when you first started, do you still use it professionally? Can you make anything doing freelance news videos, PR videos or local account commercials with this equipment?
We're going to do everything we can to help him. No doubt he will still be living at home in the summer of 2015. By then he's going to have a student loan to pay off. We have a 2005 Hyundai Accent that we are going to give him for college. I hope that thing still runs when it is 10 years old and he isn't making car payments on top of that. The thing has 120,000 miles on it but runs really well. I just fear when he graduates he's going to be in deep debt and have limited employment. I may be wrong. What do you think? Thanks.

A. Hi "Upwardly Mobile":

Fellow Contributor "L" covered most of the bases quite well, but the only point he didn't underscore is that MOST good video & film production programs at community colleges HAVE the cameras, lights, mikes, tripods, and other gear that the students will learn on & use.

When I went to a local (but nationally prominent) university with a Broadcast/Film Dept., portable video was still fairly new, but all the film cameras, tripods, & light kits were supplied by the Department for students to "check out" as-needed for class projects.

And most video production students start out with Studio Production techniques (where it's easier for groups to learn 3-point lighting, camera setup & tripod/dolly operation, shot composition, audio techniques & mixing, etc.). No need for portable field gear there.

For field production & Electronic News Gathering, a good college will have a fair number of camcorders for students to use & check out (if needed for outside-of-class projects).

The same is true for Editing Software & computer workstations. Some college programs might be economizing and making students supply their own laptops for this, but all the major software companies offer Academic Editions of their normally-expensive edit suites at discounted prices. And of course, nowadays, apps like iMovie (Mac) and Movie Maker (PC) come "free" as part of the operating system and can accomplish what older (and expensive) software used to do, as far as basic editing.

As "L" mentioned, do a bit of "homework" yourself by contacting the community college's department head & instructors for your son's chosen major. Tour the facilities (studio and edit suites) and ask about the "equipment room" for student project gear. See what textbooks (a major expense) are required, and whether computer/laptop & software expense will be part of what's expected of your son. Only if there's little-or-no camcorder gear (or no hands-on studio cameras) would I recommend buying anything like the models from B+H that you listed.

Almost every cable TV & freelance video job I've had over the past 30 years has "supplied" (rented or company-owned) the cameras & grip gear I needed. I bring my own gear only when it's a "favor" or when what I have is better-suited to the task, or they want a "director with gear". My point being, your son doesn't need to own =any= camera gear to make a living freelancing. A good camera operator can stay busy in almost any part of the country, with just his/her skills. (Same for sound mixers & boom/wireless mike operators.)

hope this helps, and hope it saves you some money,
--Dennis C.

lexar Multi use 4GB memory card not working?

Q. 2 Years ago i went to Australia and accidentally plugged my american camera into to a electrical

socket without a converter and now when i put it in my Fuji camera(which i bought in Australia when

my camera stopped working (it doesn't have to be charged it just takes battery's)) it says 'card error'

and if i put it in my computer it says i have to format it but it says it'll delete everything which i don't

want to happen ..at one point when i put it in my computer it showed about 1/10 of my photos but

that's it ...is there anyway for me to get my photos back?

A. Hey, that is a great question, thanks for coming to answers, I hope this information helps.
This has worked for me several times, so I will pass it on. Plug it in the port, heat it with a hair dryer, wait a minute, plug it in and out a couple times. If it still does not work try the same thing with compressed air to cool it. If it start working copy the data as it may stop working again any time... Other techs sometimes run check disk on flash drive and say it works, some times. I have tried it and it did not work for me...

Plug it in with the computer running. Then shut the computer off and remove it. Reboot the computer, wait a minute and plug it back in. If it is okay, It may have been left in an open state.

The small microprocessor on the motherboard will reload the drivers and your USB ports should be back to recognizing all devices! to achieve this simply power down you pc as you normally would and then unplug it from the wall for about 2 minutes. plug it back in and power up. hope this works for you.

How to audition for SM, JYP, and YG?

Q. So, I would like to know how to audition for SM, JYP, and YG. I already checked their official websites but I'm still confused on how to apply, as there are many ways to audition. I know for SM you can apply via email and post if you can't make it to the live auditions (global and open). But when people say online audition do they mean email audition? And to apply for global you can apply one of 3 ways: email, every sing, and online. But, are email auditions different than email applying for global auditions? And for JYP, I don't think they have global auditions, or am I wrong? The only way to apply is live in Seoul, online (only members can right?), or post, right? And YG why do they only have Global (last time I checked was in Thailand) and post! Do they have email (online auditions)? Thanks and I hope you can answer all my questions. Also,
1) Where does SM usually hold their global auditions?
2) Do you have to attach video file (dancing), MP3 file (singing), and photos? Or you can just attach two (like only photos and singing or only photos and dancing)?
I really need the answers badly because I'm planning to audition and missed out this year but hopefully will go in the future :). Wish me luck!!

A. Hey open this website ! This is really helpful to answer your question and how-to apply for SM audition :)

I've been searching in google but i can't find any YG email address to send our audition application , i heard YG only open auditions face-to-face it means they really wanna see your talent , not by video , but face-to-face .

I only find their address for sending a tape that contains our audition video

Is Nikon d40 still a good camera in 2013?

Q. Found a used Nikon d40 I might buy. Not sure about a camera with fewer megapixels than my phone(6.1). Anyone with experience with this camera let me know how well the pictures turn out? How large can I enlarge a photo before it starts to look pixelated? I currently use a film slr (k1000) and a digital bridge camera(16.1 mp fujifilm) and just want to be sure I'm not taking a step back.

A. Eric, in my opinion you should skip the ancient, outdated Nikon D40. Yes it was a good camera in its day buts its a 7 yr. old model and DSLR technology has passed it by.

I suggest considering the Pentax K-30 DSLR since it can use any lenses you have for your Pentax K1000. Pentax introduced the "K" lenses mount on your K1000 in 1975 and its still used today on their DSLR cameras.

What is a good camera for a beginning photographer? With a $50-$150 price range?
Q. I'm a college freshmen and photography is my life. I havent taken 1 photography class yet, but will in January 2013. I was looking for a good camera, not to cheap and not to expensive, because I don't like taking pictures with my iPod. Anyone have information, please comment below. thanks!

A. If by photography, you mean taking complete control of the camera, choosing the lens aperture, shutter speed and lens, then the camera that falls into your budget, would be a good used 35 mm SLR. You can find them on craigslist in a city near you for under $100. Nikon and Canon 35 mm SLR cameras are most plentiful and account for over 60% of all dSLR's sold.

With a budget of $50-$150, you cannot find any dSLR camera and digital P&S cameras start at $125.

Here is a link that might help you find a $125-$150

which is the most liked camera in U.S in 2013 and is there camera that prints th photo right away in full size?

Q. thanks.

A. The most popular may not be the same as the most liked.

Many people love their P&S camera or the ones on their cell phones (mobiles)

The most used cameras by professionals are the Nikon D series and Canon 1D series cameras. A smaller number use Hasselblad and Mamiya digital cameras

As far as instant print cameras, they produce much smaller images than what you are calling "full size". The closest to doing that would be the Fujifilm Instax 210. It produces an instant print on film.

How would I go about filming a documentary on my senior year?

Q. I'm about to enter my senior year of High School and I'd like to film the senior year of my friends and I from the last weeks of summer of 2013 till the day before we all leave for our respective universities. I've had this idea for quite some time but im not quite sure how to go about it like should i film in school? or could i even film in school? What aspects should i capture? If one of us mistakenly or purposely does something illegal could we get in trouble if it is on film?
I plan to show the film probably for our five year class reunion
Also, which would be the ideal camera for filming and what editing programs should I use. Any and all input is greatly appreciated!

A. If you really want to know how its done then just go out their and do it. That is really the best way to learn.

1:
It might cost you some money but if you go to Radio Shak (or shop around on the net) you could see about getting some sort of little camera that you can conceal like in your hat or something. I would suggest using two cameras at all times film your documentary, one that is concealed and one is a small handheld.

2:
When filming just be casual and relaxed don't act nervious or suspicous because this will draw unwanted attention to yourself. Just act normal, you are not really doing anything wrong anyway.

3:
The first thing you should think about is that you don't need to make a spectacle of the fact that you are making a documentary, the less people who know the less oppisition you will have from anyone.

4:
You don't even have to tell people right away (around or after graduation) because it will be more of a surprise to everyone when you show it for reunion.

5:
Your filming should focus on all of the fun things including your friends and teachers who are close to you. Don't forget to included yourself if you also want to be in your documentary, maybe have someone else take turns filming for you.

6:
Try and make people feel special and capture the special moments even for the social outcasts, just generailly try and make people feel good about themselves.

7:
Stay away from contraversial issues. don't film anything that would hurt anyone because this will just turn something good into something bad.

8:
You should film all the major events like dances, homecoming etc etc.

9:
When filming try and be within a reasonable range so that you get really good sound and picture quality.

10:
Be really mindful of the fact if you are moving around a lot, up and down etc. etc. then the video is going to be very shaky and no one likes watching shaky, bouncy, bad quality video.

Try and use a tripod whenever possible probably at like events.

11:
whatever footage you get you should upload it to your computer daily that way in case someone does attempt to keep you from filming a documentary you will still have some footage. YOU SHOULD SAVE AND UPLOAD THE FOOTAGE YOU GET ON A DAILY BASIS.

INDIEGOGO .COM is a very popular crowdfunding website among independent /short film producers, this might prove to be an invaluable resource to you as well.

It would probably help for you to read this list of books

1: The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers: A Legal Toolkit for Independent Producers
by Thomas A. Crowell (Paperback)

2: All I Need to Know about Filmmaking I Learned from the Toxic Avenger
by Lloyd Kaufman (Paperback)

Any of the books by Lloyd Kaufman, he is somewhat of an authority on independent filmmaking.

What is a good camera?
Q. I am sick of getting these digital cameras that eat batteries and take fuzzy pictures and then just stop working. My third one just won't turn on any more. Once I take it back, I want to find a new one. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm looking for around the $100 mark but I'll appreciate any ideas you have.

A. Canon PowerShot A2500 is an excellent camera. This camcorder comes with 2.7-inch TFT color LCD . It also has 16megapixel and ½.3 inch ccd sensor. It can also hold up to 64gb sd card. This camera shoots awesome videos with a 720p HD and have been one of the top recommended in 2013 so far. It would be perfect for your youtube videos. It is sold at amazon for $85 which i think is a decent price for such quality. I have provided links below for you.

Getting all of my film speed with Rodinal?

Q. I've been playing around with different films and developers and combinations for the past couple of months. I want to branch out from HC-110 and see what else is out there, and what else I like.

I've read a lot about Rodinal not delivering full film speed, and I pretty sure that's what I'm encountering here. It seems like whenever I soup in Rodinal at the standard times given on the Massive Dev Chart (a good place to start, at least), the negatives come out around 2-3 stops dark. I don't care so much for test rolls, but I shot a portrait session with medium format PanF+, developed in Rodinal, and lost at least 4 or 5 frames that could have been great. They were just too thin to recover.

Anyone have any advice here? I just want my exposures to come out the way they would if I was using HC-110. I'm not underexposing in camera, it's definitely something to do with the developer. I'm using 1:50 so far, and souping as documented on my little blog I use to keep track of my experiments:

http://filmsanddevelopers.blogspot.com/2013/05/adox-adonal-rodinal-and-ilford-panf.html
http://filmsanddevelopers.blogspot.com/2013/04/adox-adonal-rodinal-and-ilford-delta-100.html
I'm sorry, let me clarify: The negatives are thin. The images themselves (after being scanned or printed) are dark. Meaning, underexposed. I didn't state that very well.

Thanks for the info though, I'll run some more tests.

A. Like more density on the negatives you work with do you?

A photographer in Alaska used black and white film which he exposed to have a minimum of emulsion left on the film back after developing.

If it was my roll of film, I'd have had a heart attack and died on the spot! And if I had survived that I would have had my light meters. handheld and built into cameras, looked at plus the shutter speeds and lens apertures and then the film developers!

But back to all seriousness, this fella, lets call him Bill, also modified his print processing procedure, buying and using a digital enlarger timer and with closing the enlarger lens down, printed some of the most grain free images with great tonal scale! Both pics taken out of doors and pics taken indoors in low light conditions

Most lab rats would close their enlarger lenses down a stop or two and use seconds to expose proof sheets and prints.
This fella closed the lens down a few stops more and used tenths and hundredths of seconds as exposure times!

Plus had many more pic taking opportunities than the rest of us using Kodak Tri-X films or Illford's similar b&w product, pushing films to a paltry asa 800, 1200 or 1600 and exposing films for shadow detail.

This I beleive is where Rodinal and other developers used for developing b&w films rated to higher asa's got their so called bad reputations. The photographers could not or did not know how to modify their print processing procedure to take advantage of ther film developers ability to make such delicate looking negatives and the higher quality grain free images that resulted.

(Same for sound mixers & boom/wireless mike operators.)

hope this helps, and hope it saves you some money,
--Dennis C.

How to reach India? - the Columbus' question returns, this time - land road?

Q. Hello there. For a year now, I've been planning my bicycle trip from Europe to India, but still didn't come up with any sure idea how to reach that country safe way. I thought about 3 options, but all of them contain many doubts. I hope you can share your experiences or knowledge so I could be able to confront some of my doubts, and maybe fall even deeper in some of them. So here are my speculations made as so far:

1) 1st option seems to be the cheapest one (thus preferable):
From Armenia, go through Iran and Pakistan - but it seems a little bit risky. First of all Pakistan sounds rather dangerous, and secondy the trip starts in 2013, analyzing the news, probably there will already be war with Iran.

2) 2nd option is the longest, and seems to be by far the most problematic, but also the most attractive in terms of the travelling itself. Appeared as a result of doubts about crossability of Iran, due to the potential war, but after all, I liked it, and I'd like to also focus on it for a while...
The plan says: go through the North - Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and... yeah, and what now?
- As far as I know the Tajik-Chinese border is crossable, isn't it? I've stumbled upon an information that the border is in dispute, thus the doubts.
- It doesn't seem to be a good idea to go through 'sensitive' China with so many electronic recording devices as needed for good recording the whole trip, does it?
- Maybe there's a possibility to cross the Chinese part via train? But is there any train station in Murghab (Taji)? And if is - are there any courses to...
- ... yeah, the next doubt... to where exactly? What after China? Chinese-Indian border is not possible, then what about the Chinese-Nepali one?
- btw, isn't Tajikistan dangerous? It's located very close to Afghanistan, some part of the road would lead just via the Tajik-Afghan border (the road has some special name, but I've forgotten it). There are mountains to cross in order to get there from Afghanistan, but I guess they wouldn't constitute any problem for 'bad people'...

3) The last one seems to be the less attractive, very long and extremely hard physically, moreover I'm not sure if not a little bit dangerous, either; therefore it's only the last alternative - to go through the Saudi Arabia (btw in case of war with Iran, which would make me to choose that way, I guess SA wouldn't be much safer place), reach Dubai and get via ship to Mumbai.

So, what do you think about it? Are some of my doubts unjustified maybe? Should I have any other doubts, that I didn't take into consideration, like dangeres comming from side of the locals, or anything like that? (btw I'm caucasian, so I'll be very distinctive in every one of those places... but how not to be, riding a bike with 80-kilograme bags...) It's hard to be predictible, when the only experience as so far is made in the European area.
Thanks in advance. If I succeed, you'll have a lot of photos and movies to watch. ;)
(oh yeah, I'm not American (yet), I'm Polish - I've set "American" in my profile to have everything in English. My bad for not saying that - guess it does make a huge difference in travelling, especially through the Middle Asia)
@oneofcold The 80 kilogrames include not only the electrical devices, but also stuff like some food, back-ups of water (there will sometimes be a risk of not having access to the drinking water, so I guess carrying 10 liters would be reasonable), book or two, some dictionaries, tent, clothes and many other utilities.
As for my devices, I'm taking one big photo camera (SLR), one little one in a pocket, little handycam and small camera attached to my helmet to capture everything more naturally. But I guess it's enough for Chinese officers to be quite suspicious. Especiall that the near-Nepali areas are the Tibetan ones, or around the Tibetan.

A. If you weren't on a bicycle, it would be fairly simple - take the Trans-Siberian Railroad to Beijing, take the train to Tibet, cross into Nepal at Kodari, and cross into India.

The bicycle makes things a lot more difficult. I have no idea how bad the roads are in remote parts of Russia and China, or how hard it is to cross the Himalayan mountains by bicycle (take the Alpine stages of the Tour de France and multiply by 10 probably).

Would you need 80 kilograms of camera equipment? Not only the Chinese authorities might give you a problem, but that might also make you a target of thieves. Could you carry a small digital camera with video capability?

What is the best time of the year in 2013 to buy a digital camera?

Q. I figured before Christmas of 2012 would be a bad time to buy one, but what would be the best time of 2013 to buy one, taking product cycles into consideration? I don't know too much about that, really. Thanks for any input!

A. The best time to buy a camera is now.

If you wait until tomorrow when the prices may have dropped you have wasted another day not having a camera. Because tomorrow arrives and tomorrow they may be cheaper... another day of your life gone.

what is a good websight to learn photography?
Q. I need a bunch of info on cameras and how to use them (Nikon) by May 11, 2013 any help would be great. THANKS

A. Cambridge in Colour is pretty good: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/
Digital Photography School is also good http://digital-photography-school.com/
For info on camera's, brands, specifications etc, and a photography forum try DP Review http://www.dpreview.com

The brand of your camera is irrelevant - all cameras work basically the same. For the specifics of the operation/functions of your particular camera, there's the user manual that came with the camera. Keep it handy with you for reference.

BTW there is no such thing as a "websight". It's a website.

Which one should I get? I am really confused. Can u also tell me the difference between the two Ethernet types, GDDR5 vs DDR5 and the sound systems and also are the hard drive speeds make any difference with SATA and SATA III. At last and tell me which one is bang for the buck. Thank you in advance. Please describe of why you know.

A. The $679.99 desktop seems to be a better buy since it has a memory card reader. The addition of a memory card reader allows you to read memory cards such as those from digital cameras and a few other devices to be used.

The Ethernet ports are the same since the desktops are the same model which, I presume, uses the same motherboard. The different types of Ethernet LAN are the theoretical speeds that the Ethernet is able to handle, most if not all new computers in 2013 come with 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet LAN. The more speeds do not matter since everything is restricted by internet speeds by your internet provider (Verizon, Comcast,etc...)or by networking equipment in your home. If you connect to your internet with a cable to your router or modem, the Dell Ethernet LAN is used. If you use WiFi, then the Dell wireless LAN is used.

There is no difference between GDDR5 and DDR5 since they are labelled under the amd radeon 7570 card which is a dedicated card with its own memory. DDR5 is GDDR5 when it is under a graphics card. A dedicated card is for better performance and graphics for gaming or videos.

Hard Drives in pre-built computers are hard to find out, but again there should not be a difference since they only have one hard drive but the xps 8500 has its hard drive connected to a SATA III port.

The sound systems does not make any difference as many integrated sound systems are sufficient enough. You may have to buy separate speakers for either of the computers which adds to your computer costs since new computers may not come with speakers.

The $679.99 model is better since it costs less and has the same specs and a memory card reader. Keep in mind there are other things that may increase the price of your desktop such as taxes and additional items that are not included such as speakers and monitors. If you are buying from a store, haggle with the manager for a better price, be sure to be kind to them. Best regards to you

Apple vs Android/Microsoft which is better? and Why?
Q. Hey guys whats up?
Before I ask my question I feel I have to defend myself from everyone, including the Apple Lovers(which I am one, I just purchased My iMac, iPad, have had more than one generation iPod, and have the iPhone 4S) but to simplify my question as much as possible my biggest issue with the iPhone is not too much the iOS but why is apple technologically behind in their phones... I mean I have thought about it the past couple of the days, if it wasn't for the Strong Customer Loyalty, comparing apples to apples with other Android Based phones. Apple seems to be behind technologically, like the Cameras. I use to Have the Android HTC EVO 4G ( although I know it really wasn't the real 4G) but it was allot faster than the iPhone (that at the time was still predominately the iPhone 3G, 3Gs, or 4), it had an awesome camera, it had SD support, Adobe Compatible etc... And lately there has been allot of articles on the internet and all over the news stating that the Apple iPhone 5 is already inferior to the Samsung Galaxy S3 and will be Surpassed even worse! come March 2013. Whats your input on this? is Apple behind technologically and if so do they do this as part of their marketing scheme? or is it just bologna?

A. I don't know too much about the windows phones. They seem to be getting better but I never really looked in to them. I have done major research in the Samsung phones and IPhones. Here is what I got.

What phone is better? It depends on what you want and look for in a phone. If you want a phone that obviously makes phone calls, you do a little text messaging, a little but of Web browsing, no watching videos on Netflix or YouTube, want a decent camera, and a simple phone. Then get the IPhone 5.

If you want a phone that obviously makes phone calls, do a lot of text messaging, a lot of Web browsing, watch movies on Netflix and YouTube, Facebook, has a good camera, play games, big screen, and is customizable. Then get the Galaxy S3 or the Galaxy Note 2.

The Galaxy S3 US version has a 1.4 GHz Dual Core processor, 2G of RAM, 4.8 inch 1280x720 16:9 aspect ratio screen, 2100mAh battery, 64G expandable micro SD slot on top of a 16G-32G internal memory, Great camera (has 20 picture burst and can take pictures as fast as your finger can hit the button also takes video and pictures at the same time), picture in picture (you can watch your movie at the same time your text messaging), Sbeam, share pictures through wifi, 4G LTE, Facebook, YouTube, google search, google maps, supports JAVA, swipe technology (means you can text words without having to take your finger off the screen for each letter. You might have to google it for better description), and more.

Me personally I like big screen phones and will be getting the 5.5 inch Galaxy Note 2 with a 1.6 GHz Quad Core processor, 2G of RAM, 16G-32G-64G internal memory, up to 64G external micro SD slot, removable 3100 mA battery, 4G LTE, SPen, supports JAVA, has google talk now, YouTube, Facebook, google search engine, google maps, customizable screen, great camera (with 20 picture burst and as fast as you hit the button it takes the picture just as fast and also takes video and pictures at the same time), picture in picture (means you can continue to watch your movie while you text message), Sbeam for sharing pictures instantly, you can share pictures to people that are on the same wifi you are on, put things on any smart TV with wifi connection from your phone, swipe technology, screen shot movie to make corrections to grafts or emails and send it back to the person also has sound, you can write on the back of your digital pictures, actually sign your email, organize your pictures in to folders, and more stuff. That's why I'm getting the Galaxy Note 2 oh and it fits just fine in my pocket. The screen also moves the keyboard over to the left or right off the phone so you can easily do one handed text messaging. I would say go to YouTube and look it up. They have so much more stuff then what the IPhone 5 has it would be a long list.

I was very disappointed in the new IPhone 5. If you have an IPhone 4 or 4s you should just stay with it. Siri isn't really worth getting if your coming from the IPhone 4. The IPhone 5 has minimum upgrades from the 4S. They should have called it IPhone 4SL (L stands for long). The new new an upgrade features for the iPhone 5 from the 4s are IOS 6 (the 4 and 4s will be getting too), A6 chip (which is slower then the new Android phone the Galaxy Note 2 and all other Quad Core processors coming out), updated Seri, 4G LTE, 4 inch screen, 3D mapping (Android has had for years), turn by turn navigation (Android also had for years), little upgrade for the camera like panoramic picture (another thing Android had for years), a little bit bigger battery (3.7v instead of 3.6v and 1445 mA instead of 1435 mA), 3 microphones instead of 2, a smaller power charger (which makes all your other charger and docking ports irrelevant), No google search engine, No YouTube, and No Google Maps. Apple is going to charge around 30 dollars for each adapter you buy. Google dropped their stuff from Apple. Like I said minor upgrade.

I feel that Apple is behind on the technology side. They have been on cruise control. Why spend a lot of money on innovation and technology, when you can spend a little bit of money for minor upgrades and people will still buy your phones. Until Apple takes a major hit in their phone sales don't expect any major innovation or technology. The new stuff they came out on the IPhone 5, Android has had for a few years now. Apple is also very restrictive on what you can put on their phone and what you can do with their phone. Android is open to what you can do to their phones.

The Galaxy Note 2 will not be out till around October 21st if you are now interested in that phone. But again its all about what you are looking at in a phone. If you like the big screens get the Galaxy S3 and or the Galaxy Note 2. definitely youtube the galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2 for more of their features. Also go to the store and see what feels right in your hand. Hope this helps you out.

Best filming camera to film movies?

Q. Hi! In 2015, some school mates and I are planning to shoot a remake of The Breakfast Club. It will be the 30 year anniversary and we are excited to start. Anyways, I am looking for a great filming camera for movies. I know it'll be pricey but I seem to get 0 help when I just google it. I also want to know how to make the footage have an 80s feel, quality wise. I will be using the camera that any of you suggest for a number of years and films to come, and I would also appreciate if you have any movie editing software? Thank you!

A. I am guessing you are looking to use some digital camera to film. If you are going to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a professional movie camera, please ignore rest of my answer.

Most of us know that most compact cameras, or smart-phones like iPhones, are not good at video recording. If light is good, they do an okay job. When light is dull, they are almost unusable. Same is true for most consumer SLR cameras with kit lenses. So what do we do to take high quality High-Definition videos? Should we use an HD camcoder or a pocket camcorder like Sony Bloggie or UltraHD?

Most compact cameras don't do a good job in low light- for still images or for videos. If you zoom in, the shake becomes too obvious. Most DSLRs will do a little better as light level goes down but many of them will not auto focus during videos (because of the mirror which needs to be flipped for focusing). You can bypass this with a mirrorless camera which can auto focus, like Panasonic G or GF series but with Auto focus, you lose the control over which part of the frame, or on which person to focus on. If you have 3 persons in a frame, your Auto-Focus will not know which one you want to focus on. Why not? Silly, it is Auto-focus! It focuses by itself!! That is the reason you never see a professional movie or videos done with Autofocus.

Now read an article here which can give you nice tips:

Can most digital cameras now all do full hd 1080p video recording?
Q.

A. Most of them do 1080p HD video. However please be aware that most compact cameras, or smart-phones like iPhones, are not good at video recording. If light is good, they do an okay job. When light is dull, they are almost unusable. If you zoom in and do video, there can be lot of shake. You may be better off with iPhone or some digital camcorder that offers 30-40x zoom.

camera choice confusion?

Q. Hi. Il just give a brief overview of my issue...

Im aiming to travel next year from London to Auckland (no planes - the long way across europe, asia) and document my trip through photography, im having some confusion between which camera i should buy. Iv narrowed it down to either the Canon D5 mk2 or the Canon D7. I will only be taking the one body but i want to be able to capture all manor of shots but my main interest are landscape and wildlife/action. Iv read quite a few comparisons and am feeling a little overwhelmed. It seems that the two cameras are both suited individually for my needs. What would you recommend? Any advice on which lense i should invest in would also be appreciated. Thanks for your time
How come? I know the MK2 is FF which is better for the landscape but the D7 shoots nearly twice the fps. Could i substitue the FF and use a wide angle lense? Im an amateur hence the lack of knowledge. Thanks
Thought i should also add im about to start a photography course in order to understand the theory. Il have mucho fun putting it all to practise before i start on my journey.

A. Either camera will, in the right hands, produce good results. However, these are rather bulky cameras so you really should visit a camera store and handle both models. Think about carrying either of them for several hours a day.

So I'm going to suggest a different make and model of camera for you to consider - the Sony NEX-5R which has an APS-C sized sensor and is Wi-Fi capable. Here is a review/preview:
http://www.dpreview.com/previews/sony-alpha-nex-5r

At B&H - http://www.bhphotovideo.com - you can find the Sony NEX-5R with an 18-55mm zoom lens for $748.00 or you could buy the body for $598.00 and add the all-rounder 18-200mm zoom for an additional $848.00. A version with a 16-50mm zoom lens will be available on or about Jan. 23, 2013 and is shown for $798.00.

Regardless of what make and model of camera you decide to buy, you're going to have to devote time to read & study the Owner's Manual. You'll also need to learn about the main components of photography - Light, Composition, Exposure and Depth of Field. Contrary to popular belief, simply buying an expensive camera doesn't automatically mean you'll immediately begin making good pictures. Spend time at these sites:

EXPOSURE

DEPTH of FIELD

Another, more esoteric component of photography is called Seeing Photographically. This site will help you understand what this is:

5,000 files in one folder Keeps freezing Windows?

Q. I have taken photos over a period of 6 years.. and ive put them all in one folder..

I have 1.12 GB (1,206,584,242 bytes) of total data in one folder with four sub folders but it has over 90% of the pictures in the root folder of E:\photos\Digital Camera\ <--- theres at least 5,000 files there.

Now when I go into the folder to view files... explorer.exe takes 99% of system resource and never loads anymore... I want to be able to save my files. .but I Dont know what to do.. am I going to have to Delete the folder permanently and loose everything? I have tried folder options with "Do not cache thumbnails" Both on and off.. and nither works.. I have even disabled "Auto search NEtwork Drives and folders"

This is Windows XP SP3 Professional.

Please any help would be appreciated,
Thanks in advance.
im sorry when I said "I have even disabled "Auto Search networks and folders" I meant to actually say - "Automatically search for network folders and printers. " I heard disabling that helps with search times in the folders of explorer.exe to speed things up..
Thanks guys all your feedback was very helpful, Special thanks to TJ and , Ramblin' Man, Also Ramblin' Man I did have one video that was being thumbnailed and it was a corrupted file too. I deleted it. Ive already started archving and the indexing speeds is increasing very well. Thnx to all ur help.

A. In XP (either FAT32 or NTFS formats for where your pictures are stored) there's an inherent catch that affects most all operating systems - I'll try to explain...

Imagine if you will your photos were in a book (ie: scrapbook) and that at the start of the book there's a table of contents which indicates not only how MANY pages there are (in your case, each photo is a page in this index) but also the date(s) regarding the page, the size of the content and so forth.

The catch here is that the more files you dump into a single directory, the longer it takes for these "table of content" pages to be created.

The old "rule of thumb" is 512 files per directory. Once this line is crossed, you're going to reserve and use more and more system resources to gather the TOC (table of contents) and the more resources that get spent doing this, the less resources there are to DO this job.

Note: Windows 7/8 still have this flaw -- it's not anything YOU have done, yourself.

You noted there's roughly six years worth of images in this one location. Here's what I would recommend...

1. Create a new folder on the SAME drive called something like "Sorted Photos"
2. Within this new folder, create additional folders specific to the YEAR in which the images were taken (ie: 2013, 2012, etc.)
3. This will be painfully slow at first, but open your drive (My Computer > Storage Drive) and do an ADVANCED SEARCH (Press CTRL + F for "Find" and on the left menu of the Find dialog select FILES AND FOLDERS and under advanced features, choose a date range of say, 01-01-2012 through 12-31-2012 and then run the search) Once all the images for that year have been searched for, press <ALT> + <E> and the letter "A" (ALT+E opens the main menu under EDIT, then "A" selects "Select All") and then press <CTRL>+<X> to CUT these images. Go into your new folder under that year and press <CTRL>+<V> to paste them into the new location.
4. Once you've done this for a year or two worth of images, the indexing and search speeds will increase dramatically. Repeat as necessary for all images in the old folder.

Now... once you have them sorted by YEAR, it wouldn't be a bad idea to repeat this process by MONTH which will very likely help index and organize your photos even more so.

The way we do this here is even more elaborate - we take photos and other content and embed them into databases which allows me to add captions/notes, compress the images so that they do not take up nearly a fraction of the drive space and thus I can burn them onto CD or DVD with ease AND still maintain the original image quality. This takes a bit of effort and my software is in-house written and likely further than you want to go at this point, but there are truly endless possibilities how to organize your media while making it painless for both you as well as your machine.

* If you're not revisiting your older images very often, I'd also strongly recommend archiving them. The way we do this here (which maintains protection) is by first creating a zip like archive (RAR format - see link below) which compresses BMP, JPEG and other image formats wonderfully, and then take the images AND the RAR file and burn them onto CD or DVD - two sets are created in case one gets damaged. Once accomplished, they can then be physically removed from the computer and your images are safe... and they're not hurting your computer's efficiency.

** If your machine doesn't want to work WITH you regarding getting these images cleaned up and reorganized, drop me an email and I can design a quick application to do so for you which will basically achieve what was listed above with the least amount of effort (assuming the date-stamps on the files are remotely accurate) - if so, drop me an email here at CentralWare [at] yahoo.com

Good luck and hope this helps!
